Save PREP

Petition To Save PREP and Restore Dr. Berriozabal's Leadership Role

Whereas � Dr. Manuel Berrioz�bal founded PREP 25 years ago and has successfully overseen the program's growth in San Antonio and its replication throughout Texas (TexPREP) and the nation (Proyecto Access);
Whereas � PREP has positively impacted tens of thousands of middle and high school students, largely students of color and women, including 10,000 students in San Antonio alone;
Whereas � PREP and Dr. Berrioz�bal have attracted more than $30 million in financial and in-kind support, including taxpayer funds, and won dozens of honors and awards at the local, state, and national levels, including the nation's highest recognition - at a White House ceremony, receiving the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring;
Whereas � UTSA has removed Dr. Berrioz�bal from the intellectual and administrative leadership of all PREP programs and given no cause or reason for this action;
Whereas � Three of the 14 PREP programs in Texas have shut down during the past year when Dr. Berrioz�bal has been removed from the helm;
Whereas � UTSA is downgrading the PREP programs by seeking less rigorous intellectual and academic qualifications in a leader to replace Dr. Berrioz�bal; and
Whereas � UTSA's arbitrary action in removing Dr. Berrioz�bal already has weakened the PREP program, excluding many young people from participating, and will further injure the PREP program and the opportunities for young people in San Antonio, Texas, and the nation, if corrective action is not taken;


I hereby petition the President of UTSA to save PREP by restoring Dr. Berrioz�bal to his full leadership responsibilities.
